Njokuani vs. Barboza Wiki
In the first UFC 128 preliminary card bout to air live on Spike TV, Anthony Njokuani took on Edson Barboza. Barboza came into the fight 1-0 in prior UFC competition, while Njokuani was making his UFC debut after a successful WEC career.
Njokuani switched stances and connected partially on a kick to the midsection, but was partially dropped to the ground a moment later by Barboza. Barboza landed another solid right hand, putting Njokuani against the fence in some trouble. A mean low kick landed from Barboza, Njokuani landed his own a moment later but not as hard. Njokuani countered nicely and landed a good right hand, yet it was Barboza who mostly stalked his opponent and backed him around the cage. Njokuani appeared bothered in his left eye and wanted a pause in the action, but was denied by referee Keith Peterson. Barboza connected on another solid low kick. Barboza landed a right hand yet Njokuani countered with a better one of his own, and started to look more comfortable in the second half of the round.
Njokuani threw a high kick to start round two, partially blocked, and then a nice left jab shortly after. Barboza again landed a low kick to the lead leg. A turning side kick from Barboza partially landed, catching Njokuani off-guard. Njokuani caught a kick and pressed forward, dumping Barboza onto his back and connecting with some punches before Barboza could escape to his feet. A beautiful spinning elbow landed from Njokuani in what was turning out to be a good round for the former WEC competitor. Barboza whiffed on a zinger of a wheel kick to the head, and then took Njokuani down to the mat with just a few seconds left in the round.
A push kick from Njokuani started off the third and final round. Barboza attacked the left leg of Njokuani again and again, but wasn't landing as frequently with punches as Njokuani. A pair of right hands landed nicely from Barboza, then a big flying knee from Njokuani crashed into Barboza's stomach. A turning side kick landed from Barboza, and with a minute remaining it was still anybody's fight. Barboza partially took Njokuani to the mat, holding him down for almost the remainder of the round. The fighters stood up and with seconds remaining Barboza connected on a highlight-reel spinning kick to the head, sending Njokuani stumbling backwards as the horn sounded.
All three judges scored the bout 29-28, for the winner by unanimous decision, Edson Barboza.
