Pellegrino vs. Tibau Wiki

Tibau enters the cage first to Black Sabbath's "Iron Man," looking typically enormous for a 155er. Point Pleasant, New Jersey native Kurt Pellegrino follows him in with Kenny Florian in his corner.

Tibau declines to touch as the opening bell sounds. The men circle through the first 45 seconds. Tibau is throwing hard, but not yet connecting. Tibau looks for an outside leg trip but Pellegrino shrugs it off. Tibau throws knees against the cage, pinning "Batman" against the fence with his head. Head kick from Pellegrino is blocked. Both men are having trouble landing in the center of the Octagon. Pellegrino then attempts a single and is rebuffed. Neither man can seize an advantage. Tibau lands a quick double leg but Pellegrino bounces back up immediately. The men jockey for position against the cage. A good flurry in the last ten seconds is the best action of a close round.

Round two begins with more feinting by both men in the center. Neither is opening up. Pellegrino wades in with punches but none land. Barely a single heavy shot landed by either man halfway through the fight. Inside leg kick by Pellegrino. Pellegrino suddenly rocks Tibau badly with a huge right, followed quickly by another right, and follows up with a big takedown into side control. Pellegrino lands again and Tibau is in survival mode. Pellegrino remains in control on top but is having trouble following up his huge shot. Tibau is patiently recovering, but can't return to guard for over a minute. Tibau is cut over his left eye. Tibau bounces up with 0:40 remaining in the round. He looks recovered but the round belongs to Pellegrino off of his big right hand.

The men resume the pattern of difficulty landing in the early goings of the third. Tibau is throwing the left hand hard. Tibau attempts a takedown but succeeds only in pressing Batman against the cage once again. Tibau lands a nice left. Tibau stuffs a takedown of Pellgrino's and shortly thereafter secures one of his own. Tibau briefly holds side control and then lands a few shots as Pellegrino stands. Tibau controls the round with 90 seconds remaining. Tibau bloodying Pellegrino, who is getting tired and sloppy. Tibau lands another takedown with 30 seconds remaining that looks to secure him the round, but the fight as a whole is close as the men go the distance.

The judges have it 29-28 Tibau, 29-28 Pellegrino, and 29-28 Tibau, who is the winner by Split Decision.
