Finney vs. Carmouche Wiki
The second televised bout of Strikeforce Challengers 12 had Jan Finney take on the undefeated Liz Carmouche. Finney was 0-1 in Strikeforce, having lost a one-sided title fight to "Cyborg" Santos at a higher weight class. Carmouche was 1-0 in Strikeforce competition.
Carmouche circled throwing low kicks to start, while Finney threw jabs from the center of the cage. Finney mixed up her attack midway through the frame, throwing kicks both to the midsection and lead leg of Carmouche. Carmouche was effective in landing punches when Finney closed the distance, and then scored a takedown into Finney's guard. Finney used an active guard to twice look for an armbar submission from her back, yet Carmouche easily shook free both times. A scramble saw Finney take top position and side control, with Carmouche showing good ability in tying up her opponent to avoid being hit as the round expired.
The fighters came out quickly in round two, ending up on the mat with Finney eating a light illegal knee to the face that went unnoticed by the referee. The action continued with Carmouche in Finney's guard yet not scoring much damage. Carmouche stood over the butt-scooting Finney and threw a series of kicks to the legs. Referee Chris Gates broke the fighters up after being stalled in the clinch. Carmouche connected with a good straight punch to the head and looked to be seizing control of the bout.
Carmouche's superior kicks and combinations were on display to begin the third round until the fighters clinched up. Carmouche landed in mount on Finney, throwing strikes as Finney gave up her back. The barrage of blows kept coming from Carmouche until the referee stepped in to save Finney who was no longer defending herself.
The convincing victory kept "Girl-Rilla's" undefeated record intact at 1:30 of the third round. Commenting to Mauro Ranallo in post-fight interviews, "The goal was just to counter, take her back, and take control," stated Carmouche.
