Fabiano vs. Benavidez Wiki Update Wiki

Alpha Male squad member Joseph Benavidez squared off against BJJ specialist Wagnney Fabiano in a matchup of top contenders at WEC 52. Both fighters entered the bout with two losses, with both of Benavidez's having come at the hands of the reigning WEC Bantamweight Champion, Dominick Cruz. Benavidez quickly proved too much for Fabiano, who looked tentative and unwilling to throw hands for much of the second half of the fight. Though Fabiano, a native of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, was thought to possess an advantage in pure submission games over Sacramento, California's Benavidez, it was Benavidez who polished things off with a brutal Guillotine Choke in the second.

It took two to three minutes of the opening stanza for Benavidez to begin to assert control. Some cautious strikes from both men led to a small mouse developing under the eye of Benavidez. But as Benavidez found his range and Fabiano looked increasingly unwilling to throw the tide began to turn. Benavidez began punishing Fabiano with a series of heavy kicks to the midsection to finish the first. "Blistering kicks from Benavidez!" was how WEC announcer and UFC mainstay Stephan Bonnar called the action. Benavidez had the higher output and the more effective movement in the cage.

Fabiano slipped to the ground early to start the second frame, where most of the remainder of the fight took place. Some good positional give-and-take ensued, but the key was the series of Guillotine Choke attempts Benavidez threw at Fabiano. The first attempt was arm-in, and while Fabiano escaped he was forced to roll out of top position to do so, giving Benavidez the positional advantage. Benavidez's second Guillotine try was also arm-in and stymied by Fabiano, who looked to be in trouble from it momentarily. The third try was the charm, as Benavidez pulled off the choke without the arm in to notch a submission win over an excellent submission fighter.

The win left questions for where Benavidez's career would head next as the WEC was set to merge with the UFC. Benavidez held five wins over top WEC bantamweights, including Miguel Angel Torres, but had lost twice to its current champion, making a third attempt at a title less appealing to matchmakers.
