Ever since defeating Brock Lesnar in his UFC debut in 2008, Frank Mir had gloated about his win and publicly criticized Lesnar, fueling the fire toward an inevitable rematch that occurred in the main event of the most-watched UFC event ever in 2009 at UFC 100. While Mir came into the fight muscular and in the best shape of his life, he was no match for the size, power, and sheer aggression Lesnar threw his way, as the former WWE superstar notched a dominant second-round TKO victory.


“This fight is all about revenge,” Lesnar said prior to the rematch. “The fans are going to be gravely disappointed when he goes home with a quick submission,” Mir responded. “I hope Lesnar has taken this very seriously to make this a great fight.” Mir, the Interim Heavyweight Champion, entered the cage first. Rogan: “A lot of people don’t like interim belts, but the fact is, he fought Brock Lesnar once and he won.” Lesnar, the UFC Heavyweight Champion, entered next. Rogan: “So many people didn’t give him the respect that he deserves as an athlete, but he is a former NCAA National Wrestling Champion.” In an early sign of things to come, Brock Lesnar took Mir to the ground early on into the first round and kept him there for the duration of the round, damaging Mir’s left eye with short punches from half guard. Goldberg: “Frank’s got a smile on his face, Joe.” Rogan: “He’s got a smile on his face but that face is busted up.” Unfortunately for Mir, that smile wouldn’t last long, as Lesnar continued second where he left off in the first round, taking Mir down, using wrist control and pounding on him until the bout was halted at the 1:48 mark.


After the fight, Lesnar went on a tirade in which he insulted his opponent, flipped off the crowd in attendance for booing him, and bashed UFC sponsor Bud Light, caught up in the emotion of his victory. Lesnar would publicly apologize for his antics, but the ordeal is still regarded as a sour moment for the UFC, which unfortunately capped off the biggest event ever up to that time in UFC history.
