Bout number two of WEC 52 had veteran fighter Cub Swanson take on Mackens Semerzier. Semerzier had burst onto the WEC scene in 2009 with a quick victory over the highly touted Wagnney Fabiano, but was since winless in the organization. Swanson was 4-3 in the WEC and coming off a loss to rising contender Chad Mendes.
The two fighters exchanged low kicks to begin the first round and then began to work for position in the clinch and briefly on the mat. Semerzier aggressively attacked, landing on Swanson who smiled and returned fire in the high-paced start to the fight. Semerzier appeared to land a higher volume of strikes yet Swanson had his effective moments in a complete war of a first round.
Semerzier again appeared to be landing more shots in round two, until Swanson scored on a takedown that Semerzier was able to stand up from quickly. Semerzier stumbled a couple of times during high-paced action that Swanson may have gotten the better of. Swanson landed a takedown and finished the round in Semerzier's guard.
The third and final round saw a continued high-paced effort from both fighters. Semerzier looked to wind up big punches and knees while Swanson looked for a takedown that Semerzier was able to quickly stand up from. Semerzier secured a takedown of his own and worked to Swanson's back, unable to lock in a choke as the two scrambled back to their feet, ending the round with a flurry of strikes that had the crowd cheering in approval.
The judges scored the bout 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28 in favor of Cub Swanson by split decision in an excellent fight.
