Condit vs. Ellenberger Wiki Update Wiki

The last reigning WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit’s first appearance in the UFC Octagon was a disappointment to some fans, as “The Natural Born Killer” lost a close Split Decision to veteran Martin Kampmann. In his sophomore effort with the promotion, Condit was matched up with veteran welterweight wrestler Jake Ellenberger in a fight that would prove to be equally grueling as well as equally entertaining.

With little fanfare and few expectations riding on him, Ellenberger exploded on Condit in the first round of the fight, knocking the former champ up, down, and all around the Octagon for five minutes. Condit was hit so hard and so much that some pundits believed that first round should have been scored a 10-8 for Ellenberger.

Showing his mettle, however, Condit rebounded in the next two rounds to earn a Split Decision victory. Battling back in the standup with superior clinch work and brutal knee strikes, Condit truly tipped the momentum in his favor only when he took the fight to the ground. Once on the mat, Condit utilized his length and technical grappling ability to stifle the offense of Ellenberger while continuously attacking with punches and elbows from a variety of positions.

In back-to-back fights with the UFC, Condit had not been dominant, but he had managed to put on two of the best and closest fights in company history. After another barnburner against Rory MacDonald in front of a raucous Canadian crowd made it three superlative fights in a row, Condit could make a legitimate claim to being the UFC’s most entertaining fighter.
