Rua vs. Jackson Wiki Update Wiki
After "Rampage" controversially defeated his brother, Murilo “Ninja” Rua, at Pride 29, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua got a chance for revenge when he was paired against Rampage during the opening round of the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix. What followed was one of the most brilliant performances of the Brazilian’s storied career.
“I wasn’t myself in my last fight,” Jackson said about his bout with “Ninja” Rua. “I’m lucky it was a short notice fight for Ninja too because he would’ve kicked my butt a little harder. It’s all good this time, though.” “It’s going to be a hard fight,” Mauricio Rua said, “but I’ve trained a lot on the ground and on my Muay Thai and I think it’s a good opportunity to represent Brazil.”
From the start of the round, Rampage seemed unable to contend with the sheer aggression and power of Shogun. After enduring a beating in the clinch for over four minutes, Jackson finally crumbled against the ropes and was finished with soccer kicks at the 4:47 mark. Ranallo: “Shogun has a lot going for him in this fight. He saw [Wanderlei] Silva, his teammate, beat Jackson twice, and he saw his brother fight him, and now he’s making him pay.”
While the loss to Shogun was one of the worst of Jackson’s career, it motivated him to go on the most impressive winning streak of his career, as he won six fights in a row following the loss, including wins over Matt Lindland, Chuck Liddell (to take the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship), and Dan Henderson. For his part, Shogun went on to sweep the Pride Middleweight Tournament to gain the unofficial title of premier fighter in the world at 205 lbs.
