Hughes vs. Trigg II Wiki Update Wiki

Long known as a trash-talker, Frank Trigg attempted to put his money where his mouth was once already against UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes in 2003, but was choked out in the first round. Two years later, he got his rematch. After kicking Hughes to the groin and opening up with hard punches in the first round, Trigg was unable to match the poise, strength and raw aggression of the champion and the end result was the same. Hughes picked his opponent up, carried him across the cage and slammed him, and finished with a choke in one of the greatest comeback fights in MMA history.

“Matt has come to the realization that I scare him on a lot of different levels,” Trigg said in the pre-fight lead-ins. “You’d think that after the first fight he’d shut up,” Hughes responded, “but he’s not. I definitely see a knockout or a submission. It will not go to decision.”

Trigg entered the cage first. Goldberg: “Mentally he is in a place—he told me this week—that he has never been before.” Hughes entered next. Rogan: “He’s beaten some of the top guys in mixed martial arts … he is the quintessential strong wrestler who has adapted to mixed martial arts.”

The drama came in the first round after Trigg clipped Hughes in the cup with a knee from the clinch. The ref missed the illegal blow and the action continued as the champion dropped and Trigg rained down punches, looking for the stoppage. Incredibly, Hughes survived the precarious position, reversed Trigg, and ended the fight with a Rear Naked Choke at the 4:05 mark. Goldberg: “That man is as great a champion as we have ever had here in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.”

After defending his title in such spectacular fashion, Hughes’s celebrity continued to skyrocket in the MMA world, and he went on to win three more fights against Joe Riggs, Royce Gracie, and BJ Penn before losing the belt in 2006. His victory over Trigg at UFC 52 remains one of the greatest come-from-behind victories in MMA history. Dana White claims it is his favorite fight of all time.
