Story vs. Hendricks Wiki Update Wiki

The second televised bout of The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale pitted the undefeated Johny Hendricks against up and coming prospect Rick Story. Story came into the bout 4-1 in the UFC and on a four fight win streak after dropping his first UFC bout 18 months earlier. Hendricks came in undefeated at 9-0 overall, 2-0 in the WEC, and 4-0 in the UFC.

Story took the center of the cage to begin round three, however Hendricks landed a left and clinched up with Story against the fence. Story attacked the body of Hendricks and looked to take the wrestler down, almost succeeding. Story came back again looking for a double leg after a striking combination yet Hendricks fended it off. Story connected with a nice low kick and then a second. Clinched in the center of the cage the fighters exchanged hard body shots. Story continued to attack the body with punches and kicks, starting to take control of the round with a minute remaining. Hendricks caught a Story kick late in the round and got a takedown with Story scrambling to get back up as time expired.

Hendricks landed first in round two, yet Story attacked viciously to the body and then took Hendricks down. Story took Hendricks's back as he attempted to get back to standing but lost the position a moment later. Hendricks fought hard for a takedown for the next minute that Story defended. Story landed a convincing takedown at the one minute mark but couldn't keep Hendricks on the mat.

At the start of round three Hendricks fought for a takedown, bringing Story to the mat but losing position in a scramble. Story looked for a choke but Hendricks used his wrestling to escape the position and put Story on his back. The remainder of the round saw the fighters in a grueling grappling match, neither able to hold onto a dominant position for more than a few seconds. The crowd grew restless at the lack of damage being scored, and indeed the fight was mostly a stalemate for the full second half of the round.

The judges scored the bout 29-28 unanimously for Rick Story. Commenting to Joe Rogan in the post fight interview, Story stated, "Johny is a great wrestler and he's improving on his striking daily... I knew it was going to be a battle of wills and it was close... when you scramble for takedowns and don't get them it doesn't look good in the judges' eyes."
