The fourth bout of Strikeforce: Tate vs Rousey featured Sarah Kaufman taking on Alexis Davis in the bantamweight division.
The fighters came out throwing strikes quickly. Kaufman landed a nice right but Davis fired back landing a series of good uppercuts in the clinch. Kaufman tied up and delivered knees to the legs in against the cage. Davis delivered a nice knee as they separated but began to look stunned somewhat as Kaufman continued to unload with technically crisp punches. Davis's face was scuffed up and reddened as Kaufman clinched against the fence again. The fight was paused for the doctor to review a big cut on the forehead of Davis. Kaufman continued to pour it on as the round continued but Davis connected as well, cutting open Kaufman and both women had crimson red faces as the round came to an end.
Kaufman landed the better punches to begin round two, but then the pace slowed somewhat with the fighters working for position in the clinch. Davis valiantly fought back in each exchange but Kaufman connected on the higher volume of strikes. The violent round came to an end with a high volume of punches thrown throughout.
The fighters began where they left off to start the third with Davis effective on kicks and knees while Kaufman landed punches. Davis landed a slick takedown midway through the round and secured side control, likely needing a finish in order to win the fight. Kaufman struggled to escape the position, defended an armbar attempt from Davis, and nearly secured top position before Davis reversed her again. Davis almost took the back but couldn't get either hook in, and Kaufman continued moving while on her back, barely holding onto half-guard and keeping out of major danger, making it to the final horn.
The judges scored the bout 29-29, 29-28, 29-28 in favor of the winner via majority decision, Sarah Kaufman. Speaking to Mauro Ranallo in the post "Alexis Davis, I knew she was gonna come in tough and come to fight, and that's what you want to see, two girls coming to fight, not talk... whoever fights tonight that's who I'll fight, that's my title."
