The opening bout of Strikeforce Tate vs Rousey featured Ryan Couture taking on Conor Heun.
Couture opened the fight with a pair of low kicks. The fighters exchanged strikes with Couture landing more effectively until Heun was able to clinch up. Couture reversed and pressed Heun against the fence, throwing knees to the legs until the pair separated with an elbow by Heun. Couture connected on another low kick and then a punch to the body. Heun landed a nice takedown with Couture immediately throwing his legs up for a submission. Heun picked him up, slamming Couture to the mat with the fighters scrambling back to standing. Heun landed another takdown, this time holding Couture down with a minute remaining. Couture made his way back up and landed a nice overhand right. A cut and swelling appeared underneath Heun's left eye in what was a competitive first round that appeared to go Couture's way.
Heun opened with a couple jabs in the second round and missed on a spinning kick. Heun dropped low for an ankle, tripping Couture but losing control as they got back up. Heun was able to slip a punch and gain a proper takedown into half-guard. Couture immediately worked for a kimura off of his back until Heun escaped and into full guard. Couture again attacked for a submission, looking for an armbar with Heun escaping and then working for a front choke as Couture attempted to stand up. Couture popped free and took Heun down, quickly transitioning to Heun's back and looking for a rear naked choke. Heun appeared on the verge of tapping before managing to escape and getting back to standing. Heun pulled rubber guard against the fence with under a minute remaining and the round came to a close.
Couture landed a nice combination to begin the third round and Heun appearing tired. Couture dropped down and took Heun down, attacking the body with punches as Heun worked on a kimura. Couture passed to full mount but Heun scrambled leaving the fighters in a variety of positions until Couture got around to Heun's back. Heun was flattened out as Couture fired away with punches to the head and referee Jerry Krzys finally stepping in to call the fight.
The official end came at 2:52 of the third round with Ryan Couture winning via technical knockout.
