The co-main event of Strikeforce: Tate vs Rousey featured Josh Thomson taking on KJ Noons in a lightweight matchup.
Noons came out and quickly took the center of the cage, but Thomson threw a slick front kick that landed on the chin, backing Noons away. Thomson then dove down for a flying leg lock, missing the mark and needing to stand back up. Noons landed a nice punch inside and also attacked the body. Thomson worked hard for a takedown and finally caught a single leg and tripped Noons down. Noons nearly wall-walked up to his feet but was caught stuck against the cage with Thomson tying up his legs.
Noons attacked aggressively to begin the second round and opted to take top position when Thomson fell to his back. Thomson scrambled up and worked for a double leg takedown, bringing Noons down against the fence with Noons immediately trying to walk back up. Thomson pulled Noons away from the fence and attacked with ground and pound from within Noons's closed guard. Referee Keith Peterson wanted more action and stood the fighters up. Noons attacked the body again with Thomson immediately working for another takedown. Thomson pulled Noons's legs out, let go, and came down with a heavy right hand, closing out the round on top with Noons pressed against the fence.
Thomson immediately secured a takedown in the third round and secured an arm triangle choke from the half-guard. Noons defended for half a minute and got out after a tense moment, but with Thomson nearly around to his back and working to flatten Noons out. Noons avoided the submission attempts but was smothered and beat up on his back as the time ticked away.
The judges scored the bout 29-28 unanimously in favor of Josh Thomson. Speaking to Mauro Ranallo in the post-fight interview, Thomson commented, "It [my performance] was shit... how else do you explain it was shit... what happened was I haven't fought in 15 months and as I came back to training camp I got staph twice and couldn't train and my cardio was shit, so the fight was shit... I'm going to back to the way I used to train and kick Gilbert's ass."
