Sakuraba vs. Gracie Wiki Update Wiki

After defeating Royce Gracie in dominant fashion in the longest bout in MMA history in the 2000 Pride Openweight Grand Prix, Kazushi Sakuraba claimed his third Gracie scalp by finishing Renzo Gracie during one of the featured bouts of Pride 10 with a serious Kimura submission.

“This is just another day in the office,” Gracie said when asked whether or not he felt added pressure from his native country of Brazil heading into the bout. The first round was a competitive affair with neither fighter taking control. Sakuraba got several takedowns, but was unable to achieve anything of significant from top position, while Gracie landed the cleaner strikes on the feet. Quadros: “This is going to be a hard round to score. I think Renzo’s been the aggressor.” Sakuraba took control in the second round, keeping Gracie on his back and on the defensive before sinking in the fight-ending Kimura, which broke Renzo’s elbow, at the 9:43 mark. Quadros immediately called it: “Sakuraba dislocated Renzo’s elbow with a spin-around Kimura.” Like fellow family member Royler, Renzo refused to tap to the lock, but accepted the defeat humbly and graciously once the referee had called the fight.

The bout was a career-defining moment for both fighters, as Sakuraba notched another win over a Gracie and Renzo refused to tap in the face of severe personal injury. Gracie has stated that he considers his loss to Sakuraba at Pride 10 to be his proudest fighting moment.
