Sixteen upsets took place among the major MMA organizations in April, including several enormous ones that made it the most surprising month of action so far this year. Topping the list was Frank Edgar’s stunning victory over BJ Penn at UFC 112 to become the leading organization’s lightweight champion. At -900, Penn was the heaviest favorite to lose in a major MMA organization in over two years. In second place, receiving virtually no discussion within the MMA community but yet still a monster upset, -600 Jeff Curran lost to Bryan Goldsby at Bellator 14 in a non-tournament bout. And coming in third was Mike Brown’s defeat to Manny Gamburyan as a -450 favorite at WEC48, a loss with odds that would have topped the list in most other months. While not with odds quite as steep, two significant upsets on the Strikeforce on CBS card took place, with -355 favorite Dan Henderson losing in his bid to unseat Jake Shields from the middleweight throne, and -210 Gegard Mousasi succumbing to the stifling wrestling game of the less experienced “King Mo” Lawal.
