Eleven upsets took place among the major MMA organizations in October, capped off by the biggest underdog victory of the year to date. Mackens Semerzier’s triangle choke submission victory over huge oddsmaker’s favorite Wagnney Fabiano at WEC 43 ranked as the biggest upset of the month, as well as the biggest so far in 2009. Ben Henderson’s epic five round victory over Donald Henderson, also at WEC 43, came in as the second biggest upset in October.
Three upsets took place at WEC 43, four at UFC 104, and a pair each at both the Dream.11 and Dream.12 shows. All in all, 32% of bouts in the month were won by underdogs. Chael Sonnen’s unexpected domination over Yushin Okami was the biggest upset in the UFC. Perhaps the most inspiring took place at Dream.12, where Kazushi Sakuraba caught the younger and stronger Zelg Galesic in a leglock after weathering an early storm of punishment.
