Former University of Missouri wrestler Ben Askren (3-0 MMA), one of the most talked about young prospects in the welterweight division, said today that his management has been in talks with the California-based Strikeforce promotion. Askren disclosed the talks today in a conversation with Tapology’s Steven Kelliher. While Askren could not confirm if the two sides have reached a verbal agreement yet, he expressed his expectation to fight in December or January either for Strikeforce or another promotion.
Should the 2x NCAA National Wrestling Champion sign with Strikeforce, he would become the latest blue chip wrestling prospect scooped up by Scott Coker’s organization. Such signings could turn into a solid division-building strategy, demonstrating continued interest by the amicable promoter to look beyond former UFC competitors and other established MMA veterans. Askren has reportedly been training at American Kickboxing Academy as well as Arizona Combat Sports in preparation for his next bout.
Kelliher’s full interview with Ben Askren will be available shortly.
